Square Top Mountain Ranch is 8,000 acres of foothills, draws, and prairie land used primarily for hunting. The ranch is teeming with whitetail deer, mule deer, quail, and rabbit which makes it a popular spot for hunters. Turkey, wild goat, Javelina, dove, fox, bobcat, coyote, mountain lion, raccoon, badger, porcupine, and numerous other small animals and song birds inhabit the ranch. A visit to Square Top Mountain Ranch is a wildlife lovers dream. Guided driving tours are also available.

In addition to the abundant wildlife, the plant life and vegetation that thrive in the ranch’s desert landscape is surprisingly diverse and unique. Though the area receives less than 18 inches of rain annually, the visitors are amazed at the different species of plants and flowers that grow here. In the spring months (April and May) the desert is full bloom with the wide variety of cactus and other hardy plants bursting with color and beauty.

Since 1997 Square Top has been lightly hunted. It has been more of a family hunting operation. A lot of the pictures are of deer taken by my son and friends or the other owners son and friends. Bucks have been harvested on the basis of 8 point or better. Mule deer taken have been less in number because of this 8 point rule. A large number of 2.5 year old mule deer bucks tend to be 6 points (3x3). The mule deer population has been rapidly growing and needs less protection than when the ranch was first bought 9 years ago. We are not a pure trophy operation. We emphasize a balanced harvest of bucks and does, harvesting bucks out of each age class. The number of deer harvested is very important to ensure a quality hunting experience and to provide trophy animals for the more discriminating hunter. Over the past 9 years roughly 16 - 18 whitetail bucks and 6 - 8 mule deer bucks have been taken off the ranch each year. This has allowed the ranch to be home to a large number of older class bucks. We have a sister property at http://www.woodstockplantation.com This site highlights our success in deer management in Misssissippi over the past 27 years.
